When you are comparing trekking poles, shaft material can change how a pole feels in your hands, how much it weighs, and how it responds to knocks along the trail. Carbon fiber and aluminum are both popular choices, but neither is automatically best for every hiker. Your terrain, pack weight, and priorities should guide the decision.
Aluminum is the dependable all-rounder. Our TREK-Z poles use aircraft-grade aluminum, which handles rocky trails, travel and everyday knocks well, and usually costs less than carbon. Under extreme force, aluminum tends to bend before it breaks. Replace a bent pole rather than straightening it. The trade-off is weight: our aluminum TREK-Z poles weigh 294–330 g per pole.

Want the lightest pole we make? Our 3K Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles weigh just 210 g (7.4 oz) each, with natural cork grips.
Want an everyday pole that packs small? Choose an aluminum TREK-Z with an EVA grip or
a natural cork grip. Both fold down to 38 cm (15 in).
