Camping with a motorcycle is a completely exhilarating experience that brings together two different activities to give you stories and memories for life. As an avid motorcyclist, you would often find yourself looking for remote road stretches that can take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Many of these roads can also lead you to great campsites; so, you might as well pack and go camping with your motorcycle.

Like with any other activity, planning and preparation are extremely vital for motorcycle camping as well. If you want your camping experience to be happy and peaceful, you need to do your homework. You need to learn to plan for the camping trip, get the right gear, pack the gear to carry on your bike, and use the same effectively on the campsite.

If you are new to motorcycle camping, following are some vital tips that will help make your camping experience a memorable one:

Start by Learning Camping Skills

When you start thinking about camping with a motorcycle, your first step should be to gather as much information as possible from all the different sources available to you. From magazines and books to blogs and websites written by fellow motorcyclists and campers themselves will be greatly helpful in learning camping skills. You will also be able to find a lot of such information on our website as well, which will help you learn to survive the wilderness with just minimal gear.

Choose the Right Gear

The next tip for camping with a motorcycle is to know the right items or gear you will need for camping, like a tent, sleeping bag, etc., and gather all possible information, like their price, weight, features, etc., about those gears. For instance, when you are searching for a tent, look at the different models available and analyze their features to see which one of those suits your needs. This will help you narrow down the list to find something that best fits your requirements for motorcycle camping.

Once this is done, you can shop around for the best price. Try visiting local retailers in your neighborhood and get help from the salespeople if you wish to learn more about something. You can also look at the different websites online and purchase from there as well.

Find Possible Camping Destinations

The next important thing to do when it comes to motorcycle camping is to find possible camping destinations. Maybe there is a place you always wanted to visit but never got a chance to. Maybe you read about a scenic place in a magazine or online. Or maybe there is a place you have visited once and want to camp there once again. Make a list of as many destinations as you can and then take the time to narrow it down and prioritize. When you shortlist the different camping destinations, make two smaller lists, one with camping destinations that are within a day’s ride, and the other with destinations that will take longer.

Once you have shortlisted the destinations, get more information about each of those from the internet. Get books or travel brochures to know about the various events, attractions, and other details about the camping areas before proceeding to the next step.

Start Slow with Short Camping Trips

If this is your first experience in motorcycle camping, the best thing to do is to start with a few short camping trips before going on longer ones. Choose camping destinations that fall within a hundred miles from your home. Take a few of these short motorcycle camping trips and you will get to understand when you are ready for a long trip. You will also be able to learn how much you will need to pack for a long trip, and if you can manage sitting in the saddle for longer hours. Some of the destinations you can choose from for a short camping trip include: state parks, national parks, recreation centers, motor camps, etc. When you think that your short motorcycle camping trip has gone smoothly, you can start planning for a longer one.

Plan for Long Camping Trips

Going on a cross-country trip is probably a dream for every motorcycle owner or biker. If you too are interested in the same, you can start planning for your long motorcycle camping trip by first looking at state highway maps to find the best routes. You need to determine the total length of your trip and the number of miles you can cover on a daily basis.

On any camping trip, you will have a lot of different campgrounds to choose from. Your first priority should be a state park. You will be able to find these parks near highways, and they often have good security and facilities. Most of those parks will also be reasonably priced. If you are unable to find state parks in your route, you can look for RV parks or private campgrounds.

When preparing an itinerary for your long motorcycle camping trip, here are a few points you should remember:

  • Remember the highway numbers and route you plan on riding each day.
  • Always start early, say around 7 AM or even earlier if possible.
  • Remember to have the names and contact numbers of all the camping destinations on your way.
  • Plan for a break every one and a half to two hours.
  • Cover around 400 to 450 miles per day and not more.
  • Plan to ride a maximum of eight hours a day.
  • Choose established campgrounds for the best camping experience.
  • Arrive at your campsite before 5 PM.
  • Make a copy of your travel plan and leave it with a relative or friend.

As you can see, there are a lot of things to keep in mind and a lot of planning to do for camping with a motorcycle. Therefore, it is vital for both first time campers and experienced campers alike to start with their planning at the earliest to make sure everything goes smoothly.
