Carbon vs. Aluminum Trekking Poles: Which Is Right for You?

Carbon vs. Aluminum Trekking Poles: Which Is Right for You?

When you are comparing trekking poles, shaft material can change how a pole feels in your hands, how much it weighs, and how it responds to knocks along the trail. Carbon fiber and aluminum are both popular choices, but neither is automatically best for every hiker. Your terrain, pack weight, and priorities should guide the decision.

Choosing the Right Trekking Pole Shaft for Your Trails

Carbon fiber: the lightest optionAluminum: a choice for varied use

Aluminum is the dependable all-rounder. Our TREK-Z poles use aircraft-grade aluminum, which handles rocky trails, travel and everyday knocks well, and usually costs less than carbon. Under extreme force, aluminum tends to bend before it breaks. Replace a bent pole rather than straightening it. The trade-off is weight: our aluminum TREK-Z poles weigh 294–330 g per pole.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose carbon fiber if minimizing carried weight is a top priority and you are prepared to handle your poles carefully.
  • Choose aluminum if you want a versatile option for regular hiking and prefer a material known for handling everyday trail use.
  • Compare the whole pole including grip, locking system, adjustability, packed size, and intended use. Shaft material is only one part of the decision.
